Jeddah Art Week: Pen To Paper

The Tree of Life by Farah Behbehani

On the second day of Jeddah Art Week (Feb. 26th), Athr Gallery hosted a thought-provoking talk with Saudi film-maker Ahd Kamel about her short film Sanctity and her participation in the Berlin International Film Festival followed by the group exhibition, Pen To Paper. The show displays a diverse collection of contemporary artwork with plenty of exceptional pieces. Pen to Paper is open till the 26th of March, and it's definitely worth a visit.

Jeddah Art Week: Sotheby's Contemporary Art & Mostly Visible

Jeddah Art Week kicked off last night with it's first two exhibitions at AlFurusya, Park Hyaat. First was Sotheby's first-ever exhibition in Saudi Arabia which displayed stunning artwork from it's upcoming Doha Auction of Contemporary Art. I was delighted to see art pieces by Farhad Moshiri (whom I'm a huge fan of) and by Hassan Hajjaj as well. The walls covered with Chant Avedissian's work were beautiful, seeing all these iconic figures in a very visually interesting manner was awe-inspiring.

Le Monde Sous Pression (The World Under Pressure) by Batoul S’himi

Second was Mostly Visible, curated by Ashraf Fayadh and organized by Athr Gallery. The exhibition features great work by a good deal of talented Saudi artists. Of course there was plenty of inspiring, aesthetically beautiful, or just downright weird art with solid concepts or interesting stories. This exhibition is definitely a must-see and luckily it will be running till the 25th of March.

On a personal note, I felt like this was the stepping stone, or the inauguration, of an exciting new era for art and creatives in Jeddah, if not the in the whole Kingdom as well. I'm looking forward to where we go from here, and the rest of the exhibitions and talks this week.
